Award Criteria - Companies
- Top Small/Medium Energy Efficient Company
- Top Large Energy Efficient Company
The number of bricks produced per year according to the CBA membership list will be the distinguishing factor between large (Factory C) and Small and Medium companies (Factory B, A, AA).
- Factory C = >36 Million bricks per year
- Factory B >15 Million bricks per year
- Factory A = >6 Million bricks per year
- Factory AA = <6 Million bricks per year
These two categories will be awarded to any company that has demonstrated excellence in energy management at an individual site. Judges will consider performance, leadership and innovation.
The award is awarded to a company that has demonstrated outstanding overall performance achievements in the energy management in the clay brick sector in Southern Africa. A significant achievement, or a combination of achievements that demonstrates the company’s overall performance, will be considered.
The company’s achievements must demonstrate the effective and continuous efficient use of any of the energy resources through one or a combination of initiatives like the implementation of energy efficiency, energy management, process optimization, energy innovation, utilizing efficient equipment, awareness creation and education.
Applicants do not need to provide information against all of the following criteria, but providing relevant information against a number of criteria will increase the likelihood of receiving an award.
Performance

Percentage reduction in energy use |
Percentage reduction in energy use measured at the company site level for the measure(s) implemented. |

Total Saving |
Total scale of energy savings (retrofits) or relative to industry average benchmark (new build), ideally measured in gigajoules (GJ) to standardise between fuel types for the measure(s) implemented. |

Relative Performance |
Where relevant and possible, company energy management and performance should be compared to a national or international benchmark according to the EECB Energy Guidelines. |

Return on Investment |
Where a ROI or simple payback period is provided, nominees are asked to specify whether the ROI/payback is energy-only or inclusive of co-benefits. Any co-benefits should be specified. A project that has demonstrated an exceptional return on investment to demonstrate that energy efficiency makes business sense. |

Co-Benefits |
Describe (and quantify if possible) any major co-benefits associated with the project, such as a major improvement in performance, social and materials. A positive impact on the environment through the company’s activities delivered to the end-user will be beneficial. |
All measures should in the best way possible be proven and demonstrated.
For a combination of measures, measures and performance for each individual measure should be provided.
Leadership

Catalysing Change |
Judges will consider how much a company has catalysed change in the sector, either by demonstrating a new technology, a new method to promote energy efficiency, a new type of site, championing and promoting their programs internally and externally or raising the benchmark for energy efficiency levels. Judges will consider both the extent that the program is novel, the effort by the nominees in overcoming barriers and the effort by the nominees or partners to promote the project. |

Integrity |
Demonstrated ability to persuade others to "buy into" a change or a new initiative and seen by competitors as a leader and role model. |

Initiative |
The organisation must encourage new ideas and risk-taking in their organisation and sector. They should propel their business through inventiveness. |
Innovation

New Technology |
Judges will consider the application of a novel technology, or novel application of an existing technology. |

Demonstrated |
New and innovative products, services and/or solution offerings that reduce the demand of energy resources should be demonstrated. |
|
Complexity |
The measures should demonstrate that despite the technical complexity and innovation it can be done. |
Energy management programs do not have to have started within any period of time, but they must be active and have run for long enough to demonstrate tangible results.
